Too much. Out of reach of the campaigners to save Dartington College. In order to proceed with their Judicial Review Application campaigners were faced with possible costs of at least £36,000 and a possible £44,600. Faced with such figures the Campaign had no option than to withdraw their legal challenge. They considered that they had a justified case made in the public interest, and could possibly have won their case for a review, but now it won’t be heard .In a statement the Campaign Committee deplored the situation “where justice is available to those who can afford it.” In spite of withdrawing from the hearing, the Campaign has been obliged to pay the South West Regional Development Agency and University College Falmouth a contribution to their costs of £5,000. a sum they can ill afford.
But the Campaign to Save the College goes on. “We cannot afford the legal route, but that doesn’t mean that we will abandon the Campaign. We are fighting for the College, but also for democracy. Decisions are being taken by unelected quangos and people abroad who know nothing of Dartington, or Devon. and not much about Britain” There is no justice or democracy in the whole affair.
Of course the RDA don’t have to worry about legal costs. They have plenty of public money. Public money to prevent the public getting at the truth.
Can anyone say where you can get justice in this country? Injustice can be bought, but justice where? Do we have any remnants of democratic procedure left?
There is still a case to postpone the moving of Dartington College. For a moratorium to examine ways of keeping the College on site. And the Save Dartington Campaign will continue to make it. It’s a pity that the RDA are frightened for it to be heard.
