THE REGIONAL DISASTER AGENCY - Sam Richards
Why does the RDA/UCF bullying of the Save Dartington Campaign not surprise me? – simply, of course, because the implementation of the plan to destroy Dartington College of Arts had been characterised by bullying from the word go. I should know. Not only bullying. One might add authoritarianism, secrecy, arrogance, stupidity, and disregard of democracy so blatant as to the breathtaking.

The fact is – and the RDA knows it – the Save Dartington College Campaign has an excellent case which deserves to be heard. Alas, the only public money the Campaign has (the only money it has full stop) is the small but generous amounts raised as a result of fund raising activities. The RDA, on the other hand, is a publicly funded body, although – it seems - not accountable to members of the general public. In order to combat a public challenge from citizens upon whose taxes it relies it is prepared to spend public money on attempting to crush its public opponents. This is not democracy, This is a joke.

It is also more proof, if more were needed, that the whole Dartington affair is a stitch-up between quangos and a visionless college executive and Board of Governors, This was made clear back in the summer of 2007 when the Campaign wrote to Tony Blair, only to find out that college principal Andrew Brewerton chaired one of Blair’s committees on Higher Education.

All concerned citizens who would desire to see real democracy should now be calling for the abolition of the RDAs throughout the country. The Dartington case has proved that they are cowards, scared to death of the truth about Dartington coming out in public, scared also of their own incompetence being exposed, and happy to bully the Campaign out of court.
